CAUSES OF INSTITUTIONAL RESISTANCE TO CHANGE

I.       Resistance to change by faculty

A.     Fear for job security (Young, 1997).

B.     “As human organizations, institutions of higher education are constrained by habit, tradition, and culture. These represent the most significant obstacles to organizational change and they therefore must be recognized and addressed in order to realize genuine pedagogical and institutional transformation.” (Jaffee, 1998).

C.    Faculty - concerned with compensation (status and financial) (Jaffee, 1998).

II.     Resistance to change by administrators

A.     Support Staff - working conditions as "front line troops" an issue (Jaffee, 1998).

B.     University Community - reputation of institution a prime concern (Jaffee, 1998).

C.    Academic Units - concerned with allocation of resources (Jaffee, 1998).

D.    Government - possible source of funds if we could gain access (Jaffee, 1998).

E.     University Management - financial return and reputation are key issues
