WHAT CAUSES POOR QUALITY IN DISTANCE EDUCATION?

·        Unscrupulous operators of diploma mills.

·        Lack of sufficient oversight of distance education institutions and programs (Bear, 2001)

·        Lack of knowledge on the part of sincere administrators and instructors as to what works and what does not.

·        Lack of reliable research to provide educators, instructors, and students with a factual basis to make decisions. (Phipps and Merisotsis, 1999).

·        Insufficient organizational controls.

·        Insufficient means of assessing program, course, and student outcomes in distance education, comparing them to on-ground initiatives (Phipps and Merisotsis, 1999).

·        There are at least 60 legitimate accrediting organizations in the United States alone. This makes it very difficult for the prospective students and others to judge an educational offering (American Council of Distance Education, 2000).

·        Many tenured professors, especially at top tier universities will not get involved with distance education due to lower wages or because they believe that it will lower their status. This may have a tendency to lower the level of distance education teachers.
