Electronic Commerce 101 ONLINE

Course Objectives

I have been creating a hypothetical 15-week undergraduate introductory course in electronic commerce. I have been using not only theories and concepts about teaching, but also applying the systems development life cycle widely used to bring technology projects to fruition in business and government.

Key Elements of Electronic Commerce 101 Online

  • I began by limiting the scope of the project to only the undergraduate level, with no pre-requisite knowledge required aside from general computer knowledge and knowing how to maneuver around the Internet.
  • I benchmarked and patterned course objectives from several online electronic commerce courses showcased online at California Virtual Campus (n.d.), and Allen Gemmy's (2000) excellent course at World Lecture Hall, as well as my personal knowledge and training about electronic commerce.

Objectives for the Course:

  1. Knowledge about the history of electronic commerce Understanding of the key components and processes of electronic commerce .
  2. How to find and value and competitive advantage on the web How to make a functional web site.
  3. Have developed an independent frame of reference to judge changing circumstances and make predictions about electronic commerce Class Management System.
  4. I have designed the course with blackboard.com in mind, but feel that the structure, content and format are compatible with many other class management systems, such as ecollege.com, topclass, etc. Course Delivery Decisions.
  5. Evidence about the effectiveness of asynchronous online methods of course delivery and my own confirming personal experiences have convinced me to conduct this course in an asynchronous mode using threaded discussions and email (Summers & Reck 1998; Brenner 1997).
  6. I also decided to make the course modular in design, so that it would be portable to other formats, such as an open entry/open exit format.

Assessment

I will use a variety of assessment methods to ascertain whether or not students are achieving their goals and whether or not the course itself is achieving its goals.
